Dissolved oxygen removal from water for injection is common practice in waterflooding, Improved Oil Recovery (IOR) and Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR). Traditionally, large vacuum towers and oxygen scavengers are used, but this is changing. Today’s water flooding activities require lower dissolved oxygen specifications, minimal chemical use, and optimized use of available space and weight limits.

To meet these challenges, engineers looked for innovative deaeration technologies and found the answer in Liqui-Cel® Membrane Contactors. The compact design and efficiency of a membrane contactor enables the design and construction of deaeration systems that are much more compact, so they occupy less space and can be installed in areas where larger deaeration equipment is not feasible. A system utilizing membrane contactors for deaeration can reduce operating weights 50-80% compared to a traditional packed vacuum tower and reach 10 ppb dissolved O2 without chemicals.

Reduced size and weight can also have a significant impact on transportation costs associated with moving both equipment and oxygen scavenging chemicals to offshore environments. Lengthy lead times to fabricate massive towers are also a thing of the past.
